Hf: When did you start making food art? What was the first food art you made?
S: I started making food art in December, 2008. I was heavily pregnant with my second daughter. It was to encourage my elder daughter who was 19 months old (back then) to eat independently. My first creation was a Hello Kitty food art.
Hf: What is the creative process for your food art? (From picturing the outcome to choosing which ingredient to use…
S: I sketched my ideas before I make them into food. This is to stay organised and to prevent food wastage.
S: I will also try to execute with different type of ingredients. I personally feel that food art has to taste as good as it looks and it has to be practical too!
S: Then, the fun part – Cooking and Creating! It takes about 1 to 1.5 hour of cooking from scratch to finish (depending on the recipe and complication of the food art). I usually shape the food while cooking and make sure everything is done at the same time.
Hf: What is your favourite food? Least favourite food?
S: Korean food is my favourite food but I don’t really like cold food.
Hf: Which food or liquid pose the biggest challenges?
S: Ice cream would be the most challenging!
Hf: How long does it usually take to make a food art?
S: Actually it doesn’t take that long to create these food art pieces. To create a full meal for the family from scratch would take about an hour, depending on the intricacy of the food.
Hf: What would be the ultimate advice you give to those who wish to create food art?
S: I believe that food artists should have creativity, a wholesome approach to ingredients and utilise food in a practical way with minimal wastage. For example, anyone can use fancy tools to cut food into shapes but I believe in using the natural shape of foods to create art such as using broccoli as trees as I feel that it’s a smarter way of working.
Hf: Three words to describe your work?
S: 1 Simplicity, 2 Stories, 3 Significant
