Have you heard of the great ‘Beijing Bikini’?
No, it’s not for Beijing girls. Actually, Chinese men wear sort-of bikinis in summer and even sometimes in winter. Basically it looks like this. It’s pretty common to see Chinese men ranging from all ages rolling up their shirts, exposing their belly buttons amidst humid and hot summer weather. They’ re different from Hong Kong’ s topless builders, because those who roll up their shirt are not limited to their occupation. But here comes the question- why?
Of course, it is relatively understandable that they feel so hot in the scorching hot summer weather. But why?
A Chinese medicine doctor told the Los Angeles Times that Chinese men choose to expose their belly because they feel so hot in summer but feel embarrassed to take off their shirts completely. He called it as a ‘sort of compromise to the custom of men going totally shirtless.’ Believe-it-or-not, a Chinese local says that it is illegal for Chinese men to be topless within city limits. Also some people explain it as something to do with the flow of Qi.
So what do you think?
