Before I die is a global art project that invites people to share their ideas in public space. Located in 70 countries and over 30 languages, a simple question on a wall in a public area asks, ‘Before I die I want to _______’ People can fill in the blank marks. Those who have contributed to the wall expressed how they had to reflect on their lives.

The founder, Candy Chang, came up with this idea after bereaving her beloved. After the grieving period, she found clarity in her life by contemplating on death and wanted others to realize how important life is and start embracing people around them. She started this on an abandoned house in New Orleans with chalkboard paint. Anyone could pick up a piece of chalk and freely let out their ideas.

When she posted few photos online, she received hundreds of messages from people all over the globe wanting to create their own all within their community. By creating a website with resources, people around the world were able to build up their own version of Before I die walls in over 30 languages and 70 countries.
