“Poetry isn’t a profession, it’s a way of life. It’s an empty basket;
you put your life into it and make something out of that.”
Mary Oliver
The Uses of Sorrow
Someone I loved once gave me
a box full of darkness.
It took me years to understand
that this, too, was a gift.
In Blackwater Woods
to live in this world
you must be able
你必須
to do three things
to love what is mortal;
去愛那些必死之物;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
你懂得,你生命是依賴著它;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go
Lead
I tell you this
to break your heart,
by which I mean only
that it break open and never close again
to the rest of the world.
To Begin With, The Sweet Grass
Love yourself. Then forget it.
Then, love the world.
Two Gifts
In this universe we are given two gifts:
the ability to love, and the ability to ask questions.
Which are, at the same time, the fires that warm us and the fires that scorch us.
