HF Crewon September 5, 2015 at 7:00 am

Who doesn’t want to make a hurried goodbye to summer heat already? Though autumn already started on the lunar calendar, the scorching heat does not seem to fade away, not anytime soon. Koreans call autumn as the season when the sky is high and the horses get fat. It is also the season for reading, and enjoying reed grasses. Its academic name is Phragmites communis Trinius and simply called as reed in daily lives. This grass usually grows by marsh or on wet plain near rivers.

Hf already introduced one aspect of Korean culture when the locals go on trips to see maple leaves, but reed fields are also another popular option when it comes to autumn trips. We will introduce you to the hottest places near Seoul where you can enjoy reeds in the upcoming cool weather.

Sorae Marsh Ecological Park (소래습지생태공원)

Previously a salt field, Sorae Marsh Ecological Park is a newly opened natural park that offers diverse activities from salt farming and foreshore experience at tidelands to marsh animal exhibitions. There are 5 observatory decks for tideland, 8 observatory decks for birds, windmills along with a pond made out of recycled water. Moreover, you could enjoy some fresh seafood around the park, since it is located near Soraepogu station, famous for Korean sashimi.

Chestnut Island on Han River

Bamseom, which translates to Chestnut Island in Korean, is an island on Han River once prohibited for use for 46 years. On the opposite side of Yeoido, under  Seogang Bridge, lies this small deserted island which is home to a lot of migratory birds. This island is famous for its rare species of fish, plants and insects. If you take the Han River cruise, you may find an isolated island covered with reed grasses on Han River. It is also visible from Seogang Bridge.
