HKWALLS : Hong Kong Street Art Festival

Unlike other western countries where graffiti thrives to a larger extent, Hong Kong has just taken flight in being more inclusive for all the graffiti aficionados. We are indeed marching on to embrace graffiti as a form of local art.

Hong Kong is definitely not artistically-barren. Previously, a locally ground-breaking street art festival ‘HKWalls’ took place in Sheung Wan. The theme of this event is ‘metamorphosis’. Thanks to a swarm of graffiti-fanatics, we are brought to a new era where realism and imagination intertwine. Through the medium of never-ending tide of visually-stunning imagery, we the passers-by are invited to respond directly and instantaneously to the swirl of intense emotion and thoughts manifested on the graphic.

Like all other forms of artwork, you won’t be surprised when the actual artistic representation falls far beyond your expectation. While graffiti artists visualize their personal statement in public, we simultaneously become the active participants to peruse, perceive and ponder over the artistic statements as a form of local identity in the territory. We are proud to have a group of artistic frontiers to showcase their overwhelming tide of creative influx on behalf of the locals, who are sometimes yet to be proactive and outspoken enough. We truly can’t be more ecstatic to get the most intimate touch with this artistic transformation from literally a blank slate to a highly complex finishing piece comprising calligraphy, tag and highly elaborated pieces that throw us countless WOW bombs.

The emotive representation is not confined to walls only, but also on the ‘uniquely Hong Kong’ steel gates. With the intriguingly whimsical and quirky cartoons sprayed on, the gates become revitalized and lively that you can’t help paying your full attention to them. Can you imagine if all adjacent shop-gates undergo a makeover and altogether form an urban spray runaway?

Amid all enthusiastic thumbs-up towards this ‘HKWalls’ event, perhaps it is the right time for us to ponder over and redefine ‘art’. While we are all astounded and enchanted by the meticulously crafted embellishment on the walls in different alleys, we should appreciate its intrinsic nature: boundless and carefree, and more importantly, show our respect to those who endeavored to realize the ‘togetherness’ among the locals through the intensely emotional texture and composition.
