As Korea becomes more and more gender-free with equal gender working force in the society, more and more creatives have disclosed themselves to the public. Among them are the female photographers who portray the world somewhat differently from the traditional male-dominant photography scene.
Miru Kim is an experiential artist whose works consist a lot of her self-portrait, naked. She first rose to fame as the daughter of Korea’s famous China expert Professor Do-ohl. However, she then raised her own fame through her bold and experimental works. She explains the reason to her nakedness as “less individualistic and more universal.” Her works such as ‘The Pig that Therefore I am’ in which she took pictures and filmed herself among pigs inside a pigsty shows her naturalness and experimental tastes.
There also are works that show Miru Kim’s experiential spirit, such as ‘Call Me Noora’, in which she transforms a barren desert as her boundary of life where she works, sleeps and lives as a Bedouin (a native family of the Arabian desert) woman. This interactive project incorporates writing, photography, video and Internet media, offering a whole new horizon of photography for the audience.
Zo Sun Hi
Zo Sun Hi is one of the most famous female photographers in Korea. From the recent drama Yungnyong I Narsha (Six Flying Dragons) and film Dongju to individual shoots featuring Shin Min-Ah, her works are widely known to many Koreans.
She first started her career as an assistant to Kim Joong-Man, also a very famous Korean photographer, and gradually developed her own characteristics and became as well-known as her mentor. In one of her talks on TV, she mentioned that she tries to get close to the person when she films individuals, so that the models can trust her enough to reveal their real true selves. Perhaps that is why she was an exclusive photographer for Lee Jeong-Jae, Korea’s top actor, for eight years.
Korean name Park Won-Ji, Hasisi chose her name as a photographer when she went on a trip to India alone at the age of 18. This name is not to be interpreted as the drug hashish, another name for marijuana. Instead, her name reflects the free spirit shown in her works. Hasisi does both commercial and non-commercial works known for its dreamy atmosphere.
Her works are said to be young and trendy. The fact that most of the times she works with film cameras puts a mild twist to the pictures she takes, such as creating a different mood. Commercially, she worked with several K-pop album covers such as F(x), B1A4 and Jeong Jun-Young.
Also, she is known for having Bong Tae-Gyu, a famous Korean comedy actor as her husband.
A famous fashion photographer, Bo Lee, with Korean name as Lee Bo-Gyoung, is a deceased artist, but have left many works for everyone to appreciate. Her works mainly consist of commercial works with magazines such as Vogue Korea and Singles but she also did a variety of shootings with celebrities such as IU.
Her works are mostly bright and comfortable to look at, as she was specialized in commercial shoots. Even though her official website closed, her works are still flowing on the web for us to see. For example, IU’s album Real’s album art is Bo Lee’s work.
Kwon is not as famous as the above-mentioned photographers, but her works have been appreciated outside of Korea and is now slowly gaining momentum in Korea. Her first project in Korea was dubbed The Guilty project which portrays the guilt everyone feels in the society for not living up to the society’s standards.
As can be seen from this project, her works require a lot of interpretation and falls closet to the description as to what people would call non-commercial. As her works are not yet widely known in Korea, there is much to be expected from her future works as one of the leading female photographers in Korea.
